About Microsuction
At The Hearing Hub, we provide instant and effective ear wax removal treatment. Microsuction is the gold standard method of ear wax removal.
Unlike traditional ear syringing or irrigation, which uses water, microsuction uses gentle suction to remove ear wax. This is a safe, gentle and effective method of ear wax removal and, in the majority of cases, provides instant relief and immediately restores full hearing. Our practitioners are trained in all methods of ear wax removal, microsuction, ear irrigation (commonly known as ear syringing) and instrumentation.
What to expect during your visit
At The Hearing Hub, our practitioners will use a microscope to see a detailed view of your ear canal and examine the potential build-up of ear wax. Ear wax and debris are removed using a gentle device. Our appointments include an examination of your ears and removal of ear wax using microsuction, which typically lasts between 10-30 minutes. Depending on the consistency of the wax, we may need to revert to ear irrigation (commonly known as ear syringing) or instrumentation. In rare cases, a follow-up visit may be required to remove particularly stubborn ear wax.
FAQ
Does it hurt?
In most cases, microsuction is quick and comfortable. It is performed slowly and should not cause any discomfort. It can be noisy at times, and if you have any concerns during the procedure, our practitioner will stop immediately. Our practitioners will always take it at your pace.
Why do we have earwax?
Ear wax is a completely natural product of your ear, and its function is to protect your ear against water, bacteria, dirt and other irritants. Ear wax is not a result of poor hygiene and is in fact created to play an important role in cleaning and protecting our ears. Ear wax naturally moves out of our ears, however for some, it can build up and lead to excessive ear wax.
How do I know if I have an earwax build-up?
A build-up of ear wax can lead to hearing loss, dizziness, itchiness in the ear and even tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Blocked ears can cause discomfort and leave you feeling frustrated.
How do you remove ear wax? Do you do ear syringing?
Our practitioners are trained in all methods of ear wax removal (microsuction, ear irrigation (commonly known as ear syringing) and instrumentation). The practitioner will initially use microsuction as it is the gold standard of ear wax removal. In some cases, depending on the consistency of the wax, we may need to revert to ear irrigation (commonly known as ear syringing) or instrumentation.
How often should I have microsuction?
This differs from person-to-person. Some people are naturally more prone to a build-up of ear wax in their ear canal and need more regular visits. Ear wax re-accumulates and many people like to have their ears cleaned on a regular basis, whether it be every 3, 6, 9 or 12 months. If you need to see us, you can always book an appointment by calling or using our booking system.
What is the best way to clean my ears?
The best way to keep ears clean is to use a warm washcloth to gently clean the outer ear up to the opening of the ear canal only. NEVER use cotton buds as this can damage your ears and push ear wax further back and exacerbate ear wax problems.
Do I need to use ear drops before my appointment?
Microsuction does not require lengthy softening, although we do recommend using some olive oil drops in your ears for at least 2 days prior to your appointment. This will make the treatment easier for you. Personally, we recommend Earol Olive Oil spray for general softening.
Are there any risks with microsuction?
Microsuction is the gold standard method of ear wax removal, recommended by ear nose and throat (ENT) specialists. As with any procedure related to the ear, there are always risks, although very uncommon. Risks include hearing loss, tinnitus, minor trauma to the ear canal or ear drum, perforation of the ear drum and infection.
